Definition of Search Engine Optimization for Bloggers
Too many bloggers feel that once they submit their page a search engine they are guaranteed success. That’s generally not the case. Simply submitting your blog to a search engine is not always enough to get any hits. Most blogs require search engine optimization to become truly successful.
Search engine optimization is the art and science of making blogs or web pages attractive to the search engines. The goal of search engine optimization is to have your blog ranked in the top ten internet search hits that appear on the first page. Why is it important to be on the first page? It’s important because the average internet user doesn’t click on any of the sites listed on the second or third page. Out of sight, out of mind!
Some people believe that search engine optimization is too difficult to understand. The reality is that search engine optimization is fairly simple. All it takes is a little research and most people are ready to rock…
Other people feel that there are simply too many things to learn before they will be ready to optimize their blog. Search engine optimization is just like anything else. When you first start out you know nothing. With some homework and a bit of trial and error and you will know exactly what it takes to make your blog popular with the web crawlers.
Some people believe that search engine optimization will take up lots of their precious time. People with this particular fear should remember that old adage about time and money. If time spent optimizing your blog leads to an increase in sales isn’t it time well spent? Besides search engine optimization is easy, once you have the hang of it won’t add much to the time you would already have to devote to updating your blog.
You do not have to submit to gobs of search engines to reap the rewards of search engine optimization. If you have a large blog or site you shouldn’t worry about spending lots of time optimizing it and running the risk of never finishing the process. Try to take things one step at a time. Focus on optimizing one page per day. Start with your most important pages and then concentrate on the irrelevant pages. By using this one page a day method you won’t run the risk of sitting at your computer until your eyeballs fall out of your head.
It might take some time and some trial and error to optimize your blog or site but you will consider it time well spent when you see an increase in the amount of traffic, the increase in traffic should lead to more sales.

Kathy,
Great basics here. I remember when I started out on the internet, I was ADAMANT that I would NEVER want to learn SEO.
Basically it was that I thought it was SOOOOO daunting.
BUT, when I finally jumped into it – and it worked – then I was hooked.
It is that reason alone that I LOVE content marketing and SEO – it’s fun, it works, I’m good at it, and I’m making money from it.
Great post to get the pot stirring for those sitting on the fence of SEO.
God Bless,
Linus

Great post. As you said, “One page a day.” Break it down in smaller pieces and the task doesn’t seem so overwhelming.

SEO = Search (go to Google.com and search for something you are looking for.)
Engine (this is Google, Yahoo, Altavista, Lycos, the ENGINE of searches on the Internet)
Optimization (simply put, means making is better than before, better in terms of Traffic (more people go to your blog).
Anyways, I thought I’d share that perspective on SEO for some others who are reading the awesome comments here.
Keep it coming Kathrine.

Hey Katherine,
Thanks for this great post on SEO. SEO tends to be mysterious for many people and that scares them away. I was there for a while…until I learned, as you have stated, that SEO is NOT that complicated. Yes, you have to pay attention to the details..but I feel SEO is more common sense that anything else. It is more of a strategy than magic.
Keep posting articles like this & I will have to keep coming back.
To Your Continued Success,
Bill

Kathy,
It was great meeting you in Columbia at the Partners in Learning event, even though you couldn’t remember my name when we were cutting that video.
I think you really break down the simplicity of SEO with this post. I mean really it just comes down to breaking things down piece by piece.
If someone were to eat an elephant, how would one do that? Well, piece by piece right? That’s how you have to look at SEO or else it tends to be daunting and overwhelming to people.
Thanks for sharing,
- Yo
