6 Easy Tips for Improving Search Engine Ranking
Having good visibility on major search engines is a surefire ways to increase traffic towards your blog/website. This allows your product, content, and services to be exposed to interested people (read potential customers). Major search engines, like Google, Yahoo and Bing, utilize complex algorithms to determine a website’s ranking for a certain keyword query.
Different search engines follow different criteria to decide top rankings. However, some fundamental aspects are common to all. Some such aspects include type and quality of content on your website, backlinks, number of followers etc. This Tailoring of your website/blog to achieve better page ranks is what is called SEO or search engine optimization.
Here are some tips to help you with SEO for your website
• Think Outside the Box
You may be having a list of prime keywords that you focus on all the time. That’s good. However, learn to focus on other possible combinations as well. Acknowledge the fact that being ranked number one for a highly popular keyword is not everything. Instead, concentrate on relevant keywords. For example, if you own a fitness center, don’t just focus on the keyword ‘fitness’. Optimize your website for other keywords such as nutrition, diseases, health care, and you’ll be amazed to see the results. Think outside the box.
• Ensure Custom descriptions and Titles
When you use the same tags in all your website’s pages, the search engines can’t figure out the relevance or subject of the individual pages. Remember, all your META tags need to contain the 3 fundamental components, the META description, META title and META keywords. Let’s focus on:
o Title Tag – It is arguably the most crucial tag from SEO point of view. Google allows you to write 60 characters long title tags, while Yahoo permits approx. 110 characters. You need to include your most significant keywords within the Title tag. Moreover, make a unique Title tag for every page.
o META Description Tag – There are apprehensions about its importance these days. Some search engines give due importance to title tags while others do not. However, it is advised to add these, just to be on the safe side.
• Keep it Simple
Keep the navigation and URL organization of your website straightforward so that search engines can follow it easily. Remember, search engines are unable to parse any navigation format that uses JavaScript and Flash. As such, stick to standard HTML for navigation. When it comes to SEO, URLs having dynamic parameters, such as &, ? and SIDs, are known to under perform.
• Inbound Links
Google gives high priority to your website if the number of inbound links pointing towards your website is high. So, try to gain as many link as you can through article submission, blog commenting etc.
• High Quality Content-Laden Web-pages
Google gives due importance to keyword density of your web-page while ranking it. The exact keyword density is obviously a matter of debate but 2.5 to 3% is the recommended concentration. Further, you are advised to include your keyword in the heading and wherever in the content it seems natural. Also, use synonyms relevant to your keyword to add the organic element to SEO.
• Write Keyword-laden Links
Your page will be ranked higher if the link pointing towards your site includes the keyword/key phrase that is being searched for. For example, when a user performs a search for the term ‘quick weight loss technique’ and a link containing the text ‘quick weight loss technique’ is pointing towards your site, your website will be ranked higher.

Great post Katherine!
You provided an excellent overview of SEO.
I personally think that the “Think Outside the Box” is one of the most important steps. To often, we tend to get hung up on one or two keywords and continually try to optimize for them.
If we think out side the box, we can open up new worlds of traffic to our sites, if we then apply SEO to the keywords we find.
Thanks for the great content!

Hey Katherine, good post!
You did a great job of providing some key points on SEO. Especially the part about making sure your inbound links are “keyword” links. I see so many people still using the old “click here” to go to my site links in forums and articles posted to article directories. They really need to read this post.

SEO is by far the best marketing strategy online, especially if you mix it in with social media.
I mean when you use paid mediums, when you stop paying, you stop getting traffic, but with SEO your traffic comes in today, tomorrow and forever! : )
